WOW, another decade….seems like only yesterday, well, at least to some of us, it was the year 2000 and so many not so nice things were going to occur.  Don’t get us wrong, since 2000 a number of life altering events have left an impact on our lives however 2000 was to have been computer Armageddon!!  Yet, here we are on the computer!

Since last Spring The Beaufort Candle Company has increased efforts to optimize our web site/on-line store in an effort to increase our scented soy candles earth friendly, clean burning. natural fragrances through internet activity.  Over the Holidays Google notified us that from July 1 & September 30, 2009 The Beaufort Candle Companies web site was a Favorite Place on Google.  We thank all visitors, shoppers & new clients that have visited The Beaufort Candle Company through Google.

Additionally, this week The Beaufort Candle Company was notified by the United States Patent & Trademark Office that a trademark has been issued in the name of the Company.

We are very proud of both designations look forward to 2010 and the scented soy candle business the New Year will bring.

Invention of soy wax

Scented soy wax candles are quite a recent invention. It was only in 1991, when Michael Richards, when looking for a less expensive alternative for beeswax, that he developed scented soy wax candles. There was a big demand for natural wax candles, but beeswax was about 10 times more expensive than paraffin. As he entered the candle industry with beeswax products he realized there was a growing demand for natural wax candles. Michael Richard tested different natural plant waxes and finally ended up with a vegetable wax which was made with partially hydrogenated soy oil, coconut oil and palm oil. He also blended beeswax with earth friendly soy wax to make an economical natural wax candle.

Commercialization of Scented Soy Wax Candles

In 1995, the Body Shop, a national chain of stores, was the first to offer soy candles to the general public. The first natural wax candles which were delivered to the Body Shop were a mixture of beeswax and almond oil. Later this almond oil was completely replaced with clean burning natural soy wax.

In 1996 Michael succeeded in replacing the expensive beeswax with earth friendly soy wax. The candle wax then mainly consisted of natural hydrogenated soybean oil. He developed different fragrances & mixtures of soy wax for container candles and free standing candles, which needed a higher melting point. The soy wax producer Candleworks negotiated, in 1997, a research project with the University of Iowa which resulted in the study: “Increasing the Use of Soybeans in the Manufacturing of Candles”.

In 1998 The Indiana Soybean Board unveiled, at the Farm Progress Show, special patented soy wax, Harvest Lights, which was developed by a farmer-funded group.

Since 1999 a lot of research was done to prove the benefits of soy wax. This resulted in two scientific publications:

• Rezaei, K., T. Wang, and L. A. Johnson. Hydrogenated vegetable oils as candle wax. J. Am. Oil Chem. Soc. 79: 1241-1247 (2002).
• Rezaei, K, T. Wang, and L.A. Johnson. Combustion characteristics of candles made from hydrogenated soybean oil. J. Am. Oil Chem. Soc. 79: 803-808 (2002).

The Cargill Corporation bought, in 2001, the patent of Michael’s soy wax innovation. Now Cargill manufactures made in America soybean wax, which is supplied to scented soy wax candle producers.

Scented soy candles are made from soy wax, which is hydrogenated soybean oil. Clean burning soy wax was invented in 1992 by Michael Richards who was looking for a cheaper and more natural alternative to beeswax. As he entered the candle industry he realized there was a growing demand for natural wax candles. Soy wax is often mixed with fragrances to produce scented soy candles. Advantages of scented soy candles

Scented soy candles have to following advantages compared to paraffin wax candles:

Scented soy candles are inexpensive – Beeswax is a great natural alternative to paraffin, but to get the same results as a soy-based candle, it is very expensive. Scented soy wax is a new alternative to paraffin wax that is cost effective. Soy wax is also made from an earth friendly renewable source.

Scented soy wax is all-natural – Soy wax is a favorite of environmentally conscious people because it is not made from petroleum, like paraffin candles. Burning of soy candles does not increase the CO2 level in the atmosphere and scented soy candles are made in America.

Scented soy candles last longer – They can last up to 50% longer than paraffin candles.

Wax spills are easy to clean – It’s very difficult to remove paraffin wax from furniture or textiles. Soy wax spills can easily be cleaned up with hot soapy water.

Scented soy candles produce less soot – Soot should be avoided because it is very unhealthy and can eventually coat furniture and walls. Scented soy candles produce about 90% less soot that paraffin candles.

Scented soy candles distribute more fragrance – The incorporation of soybean oil lowers the melting point of the candle, which translates into cooler cleaner burning candles and faster scent dispersion. The lower melting point of soy wax results in a larger size of the liquid wax pool around the candle wick. It is from this liquid wax pool that the essential oils evaporate into the atmosphere.
